Botox or botulinum toxin is actually the trade name for Neurotoxin, a substance injected into the skin which is known to weaken or paralyze muscles, and that can prevent wrinkles from developing or worsening. Although botulinum toxin is a life-threatening substance in nature, small doses — such as those used in the application of medical and cosmetic Botox — are considered safe.
Botox was originally approved for the restriction of rapid involuntary eye twitching, it was then discovered to have temporary effects on relaxing furrows and softening the appearance of lines in the skin. Also, Botox injections were also found to relax the scalp muscles, thus relieving migraines.
Botox treatments are not a permanent solution for wrinkles and fine lines. The results are temporary and usually last about four to six months, gradually wearing off. Patients will need maintenance injections every 4 to 6 months to maintain the appearance.
The average price for a Botox unit in Toronto is estimated in the range of between $10 per unit and $17 per unit. This cost, however, is way cheaper in CBAM Clinic and is $4 per unit.
